Luxury Mardan Palace Opens in Antalya, Turkey...

The grand opening of the Mardan Palace hotel in the Turkish coastal resort of Antalya was a star-studded event, with celebrities such as Monica Bellucci, Mariah Carey, Richard Gere, Tom Jones and Sharon Stone making an appearance.

Telman Ismailov, the Russian entrepreneur, was the host of the event for the opening of the new luxury hotel that is said to rival the Burj al Arab in Dubai and the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi in terms of opulence.

The lavish hotel claims to be the most expensive in Europe to build, at a cost of US$1.5 billion.

Distinctive Istanbul landmarks are reflected in the architecture of the Mardan Palace. The main building resembles the city’s Dolmabahce Palace and the bridges crossing the pool are based on the plans for the Da Vinci Bridge.

What is billed as the second-largest swimming pool in the world features gondolas that sail guests around it, and the hotel’s main seafood restaurant boasts five floor-to-ceiling aquariums, representing the oceans of the world.

The hotel also has an “aqua complex” with an artificial reef that will be home to baby sharks. Guests will be able to swim with the fish in the complex, and a 900-seat amphitheatre will provide spectacular light shows and world-class entertainment.

Surrounded by the Taurus Mountain range, the palatial resort comprises 560 rooms, including two Royal Suites with private pools. With Turkish heritage in mind, the architecture reflects distinctive landmarks of Istanbul -- the main hotel resembles the Dolmabahce Palace and bridges across the pool are based on original designs of the Da Vinci Bridge.

Gondolas will sail guests around the Mediterranean’s largest swimming pool, five giant aquariums reflect the Earth’s oceans in the hotel’s restaurants and spa, Europe’s only swimming reef provides a haven for aquatic enthusiasts to explore and a dramatic amphitheatre seating 900 will host entertainment and light shows. The resort also boasts the Mardan Spa, 17 bars and 10 a la carte restaurants including French, Japanese, Russian, Thai and traditional Turkish cuisine. Rooms range from 360 euros ($504) per night for a Superior Room in low season to 14,000 euros ($19,490) per night for a Royal Suite with private pool in high season.

The Observer: How Antalya became the new Dubai

The Observer, Sunday 31 May 2009

The travel supplement of the British "The Observer" paper, published on Sundays, wrote that the Turkish Mediterranean city of Antalya became the "new Dubai." "Turkey's Mediterranean coast used to be known for cheap package holidays, but in the past few years a swath of super-luxury hotels has transformed it into a millionaire's haven," the paper wrote.

Turkey 's coast used to be known for cheap package holidays, but in the past few years a swath of super-luxury hotels has transformed it into a millionaire's haven. Six-starred, super-sized and sexy, here is a selection of the best and bling-est.

A new £1bn resort opened on the Turkish coast last weekend with the most lavish hotel, Mardan Palace, launch party in history. Mariah Carey sang, Paris Hilton posed, and Carole Cadwalladr couldn't quite believe her eyes.

The paper enumerated some of the six-starred and super-sized hotels in and around Antalya as "Adam and Eve", "Rixos Premium Hotel", "Kremlin Palace", "The Marmara Antalya", and "Hillside Su".
The paper defined "Adam and Eve" as "the worlds sexiest hotel", and "Rixos Premium Hotel" as Europe's first seven-star hotel.
Also, the paper wrote a story about the "Mardan Palace Hotel" recently opened in Antalya and headlined it as "Welcome to the pleasure dome."

The occasion is the opening of the Mardan Palace in Antalya, Turkey , a hotel that has cost £1bn to build, one of the most expensive, anywhere, ever, and it is, she says, "a moment of potential profundity". The gala party is not just a party. No. It's a time when "we all have come together to alleviate poverty and to make the world a better place".

The guests are all either rich, powerful, or politically well-connected and include the Mayor of Moscow, Yury Luzhkov, and his wife Yelena Baturina, the richest woman in Russia. The Presidents of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Kazakhstan are here, as are the prime ministers of Morocco, Montenegro and Uzbekistan. There's also a handful of billionaires: Mikhail Fridman, for example, one of the youngest billionaires in Russia, and Suleiman Karimov, a Daghestan-born businessman.

The Observer is a British newspaper published on Sundays. It is the world's oldest Sunday newspaper, which was first published in 1791.
